If you like: the minimalist, straightforward structure of songs by ESG or if you dig an early, Rough Trade era Scritti Politti, you’ll enjoy this one!
About: In their short lifetime, Young Marble Giants (Alison Statton and brothers Stuart and Phillip Moxham) released one album, a handful of singles and a Peel Session. The album, 1980’s acclaimed Colossal Youth, is one of the definitive records of the post-punk era. *via Domino
Why it’s worth your time: Post-punk and new wave were one of my first musical loves. Admittedly, the genre can sometimes feel heavy and perhaps drone-like within a surface listen, but just beyond lies its exhilirating revolutionary quality. Even more thrilling is to find a band like Young Marble Giants who can so effectively amalgamate a sparse and sharp instrumental environment (peppered in wonderful bass lines, guitar riffs, and the occasional electric organ trill) with isolated, almost hushed vocals–and still manage to draw equal attention to both. And for this very reason, Colossal Youth can be appealing to everyone.
